Our comprehensive Valley Nisenan experience is presented in your classroom AND at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center. It is unlike any other cultural program in Northern CA as it takes a three-branched approach to cultural education: a teacher and parent workshop (Saturdays), a classroom pre-visit, and an onsite field trip with demonstrations. Your class will use the replica tule houses and grinding rock, and walk through the Nature Study Area learning the natural resources importance to the Valley Nisenan. This program includes native storytelling, making and tasting traditionally prepared acorn, and learning native skills through crafts and games.
Mandatory prerequisites for this program are the Methods of the Maidu Classroom Program AND the Teacher + Parent Workshop – both included in the program fee.
Program is for up to 35 students (and 8 adults including teacher, aide(s) and chaperones for the field trip).
Classroom program is 75 minutes at your school. Maidu Full Day field trip is 4.5 - 6 hours per teacher's request at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center. Please specify your preferred length in the additional comments text box.

Parking passes are included for participants, and for any drivers who transport students but who are not attending the program.
This program includes a scheduled meal period.
Each program is limited to 35 students and 8 adults (including the teacher, aide(s) and chaperones).
Closed-toe shoes are required for all participants on the Full Day field trip.
Programs are rain or shine, except in the case of dangerous weather conditions.
The Teacher & Parent Workshop is a required prerequisite for the Maidu Full Day field trip. It is an important day for teachers and adult chaperones to ask questions, learn about the Valley Nisenan culture, customize their field trip, and learn how to lead stations on the field trip.
This is a 2.5-hour workshop on select Saturdays from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm.
In addition to the teacher, each field trip needs a minimum of three trained chaperones (3 - 6 is ideal). These chaperones will need to attend the workshop to confidently and successfully be ready to lead a station on the field trip day. It is important that chaperones be able to focus during the workshop, so please no children.
If less than three adults from your class attend the workshop, EYNC may be able to provide additional staff or volunteers to fill in as chaperones on your field trip for an additional fee per person provided, or, at the program naturalists’ discretion, may omit skill stations as deemed necessary.
Parking passes are provided for workshop participants.
